Get through my boring rambling and be prepared for puppy cuteness!

1. I had my usual Tuesday swimming morning. I increased my total number of laps and the number of free style laps to stay at half of what I was swimming but this week it was all hard.  I swallowed more water than usual. In a pool it is easy to stop and get it back together but what do you do in an open water swim?
I felt like 4 laps of free style was hard so what will I do in an open water swim?  I am slow no matter what I am swimming. Would I do better to try to speed up my breaststroke which I am more comfortable with than to keep working on freestyle which is so hard for me?  Which should I do in an open water swim?  I can't imagine yet not having the safety of that nearby wall or the end of the pool.  Tuesday was not a confidence builder.  It took me back some.  I cannot imagine swimming 800 yards straight or whatever it is you swim in a sprint.  Who do I think I am to think I can do a tri when I swim so poorly? You can see the question that kept going through my mind as I swam.  I think I did more laps just to end on some good ones which I did.  I did feel good all day from having swum in the morning and I loved having more time after school to get stuff done and not be running off to the gym.  But .....again.........Tuesday's swim was tough.

2.  I am still doing fine on the treadmill.  Not at all sure what that is about.  I'm looking forward to getting outside this weekend. I don't remember a December ever being this dark so early in the afternoon.

3. Did anyone see Runner's World newest Rave Run?  I think it is in Norway.  (I'm too lazy to walk upstairs and check.) It is a stunningly beautiful winter scene. It's one of my favorite Rave Runs I've seen.

4. Jameson came down last weekend with his sweet little puppy, Jax.  He shook (Jax not Jameson) most of the time he was here as those pesky yellow cats (who are much bigger than he is) were everywhere. I got some great pics though.  Then I visited him Jameson on Sunday after my Santa race.  Jax fell asleep in my lap :) and was so much more relaxed at his house.

That puppy is soooo adorable!

Just remember that you have had plenty of those days when the runs didn't feel great, too. It's all part of the process. And I bet Tuesday's "bad" swim was still way better than where you started out.

You have lots of time til you'll be doing that tri. I know that you'll be able to do it. If you do a tri with an open water swim, I imagine you'll want to do at least one previous OWS just as a confidence builder. But I've been reading you now for a year or so, and I know that you can absolutely do anything you set your mind to.

When you get in the open water in a WET SUIT you will feel so much better. The wet suit gives you enough buoyancy that you can pretty much just stop swimming all together and float.

December has seemed particularly dark to me this year too. Can't wait for longer days again.

I hear many people do breaststroke in their tri's.

A couple more days and the days will start getting longer. Still, I remember from days when I lived more north, February was the darkest day for me.

Can I have that pup? Please,

I love puppy pictures!

When you panic in open water you can turn on your back and regain your composure. Continue to work on your free-style. The confidence will come!!! Trust me, I have been there.

I want, no need, that puppy!

Open water swimming is a lot of mind over matter. You're just going to get in and go. If you need to take some breast strokes, you do. If there's any way to get in some OWS practicing before the big day, that will help too. You can do it!

you can use whatever stroke you want in a triathlon. in some ways breast stroke is better, because it helps with sighting (there's no black line at the bottom to follow in the lake...d'oh!).

No advice on the swimming. That puppy is so darn cute? Are you doing the Half in the Hamptons? I am considering it.....

Jax is too cute! Love the pics :)

You have bad swimming days just like you have bad running days. Just keep moving forward and it will get easier. In a race if that happens, you can tread water for a second, do breaststroke until you feel better or flip on your back and float for a quick second. In a sprint, you will see a lot of all of the above. Don't feel bad AT ALL about breaking out the breaststroke in a race if you need to!

Oh my gosh how cute! If you're in the mood for more puppy pictures, you should google "puppies the size of a soda can"...it will melt your heart!

I'm hoping to do a triathlon in the spring but the open water swim bit terrifies me. My advice...go for one with a friend (and/or daughter) for the first time to quite literally test out the waters!

The puppy is sooo cute! I had a Beagle as a kid, she lived for 18 years, and this puppy reminds me of her. I remember just being so sad when my mom called me after I just moved out to Colorado to say she had to be put to sleep. Good dog!

Winter is definitely here in Colorado and it's dark, dark, dark! Bleh. I always think about you when the snow comes... I know you like it so much :).

The header picture is absolutely FUN!

Could you freestyle till you get tired then take breaststroke breaks? I've never seen a triathlon so I'm not sure of protocol but I'm sure they wouldn't mind what style you did as long as you don't drown.

Jax has to be one of the cutest puppies that walks this earth.

Cute puppy. I hardly ever get to read Runner's World now that I'm blogging. Those rave run pics are usually stunning.

Jax is soooo cute!

If you keep up with your pool swimming you will get better and be able to do many more laps. Open water swimming, as mentioned, is mind over matter, I actually like it better now, no boundaries, no black line. Also remember when open water swimming no one ever said you couldn't stop and rest, do some breast stroke or even take a rest floating on your back. I have employed all those things and took my OWS as an adventure and made it fun. When the race came it was so much easier, especially since I let the crazy folks go out first. Cheers!

Jax is too cute. What a doll, love him.

Keep swimming, you'll get better at it. If Emily is coming over for the holidays maybe she could go swimming with you and give you some tips?

What a lovely dog!!!
I think you will never have any problem swimming in open sea, it is easy to learn not to swallow.
Here before I learned to swim in the sea and after in the pool.
Enjoy .... the dreadmill.
Have a good week end.

You are going to be fine come summer for the OW swims. WHen I first started I would honestly panic when I would get to the deep part of the pool, worrying I will not be making it to the other side. Few months in and I was comfortable. By the summer I was swimming fine. I would continue practicing the breast strokes, back stroke , etc. They help with the monotony and they can be helpful in races as well. Excited for you!

The puppy is just so cute!! And I truly believe with more pool time, you will feel more confident about your swimming skills and you WILL be able to handle 800yds of swimming. Just keep at it, you can do it!

And I LOVED the photos from the Santa 5k, I would love to do that through Burlington!!

swimming. no idea. OWS's are what scare me away from triathlons :)

the rave run is gorgeous! though they always are. whenever i'm running somewhere other than the usual neighborhoods i run in, i wish i had my own personal photographer.

jax is adorable!! what a babe-magnet for jameson ;)

OMG that puppy is sooooo adorable :)

I'm not worried about you and the OWS, I just know that by then, you'll be ready and you'll just get it done. Hang in there!

I am the biggest scaredy-cat in the world and *I* have survived open water swimming, so I know for sure that you can, too. So stinkin' proud of you for going so far outside of your comfort zone, what a rock star you are!!
I am madly in love with that puppy!! He reminds me of our old beagle Daisy, I still miss her.

So you have "those" kind of cats, eh?? Bullying the little pup could come back to haunt them!!! We can't swim, so no advice on the open water OR indoor swimming for you!! Hope you got outside this weekend.

What a beautiful dog! Nice photos!

Do you know how to comfortably tread water? I think that would help in an OWS (though have never done one in a tri but I swim across the cove in my lake and tread water or mix up my strokes whenever I need a break).
I love Jax!! So cute. I had a beagle growing up but he followed his nose and got lost (or stolen) when he was 2. He was a really sweet dog though.
