Bye bye first triathlon!

Mary and I were having a great ride today and we were on our way back from Garden of the Gods.
I took a turn and wasn't ready for the steep hill - totally in the wrong gear.  With my own bike I might have recovered.  But I fell and it hurt.  A man came along and fixed the twisted seat with his tool - truly - and I thought all was good.  But when I went to ride I could put no pressure on my wrist.  I walked a ways and tried again.  Nope.  Mary rode several miles home fast to get the truck.  I sat in a gas station and iced my wrist with ice from the soda machine.  Several hours later   I know I have a break. No triathlon that I spent
hours/days training for.  You all know what I've done, you've been there with me.  I've been teary more than once and I'm sure I'm not done.  All those long bike rides I had planned.  My love of my clips.....will      i dare to use them again?  I know there are much worse things but I'm in the middle of a pity party.  Please pour on the sympathy.

Ouch! That really sucks you will miss your first tri :-(. How long will you be in a cast?

Regarding the cliplessnpedals, the hardest thing to learn to do is not stick your arm out and learn to land on your shoulder.

Oh nooooooo! I am so sorry :(

Gobs of sympathy-pouring commenceth.... We can't even believe it - such an awesome weekend for you to end like this. Not right. At all. We feel SO bad for you - all the hard work running and riding and then the extra, extra hard effort put into swimming - what can we say but that it's big time crummy. Where were you two riding? I guess this means you can put off opening "that" package a little longer. Sorry for my pathetic attempt at a little humor. :-) You should be able to ride your bike with a cast, though, as we've seen others do it! Or, just to be extra safe, you could put your bike on a stationary trainer for awhile. :-( You probably didn't even get a chance to try your new Hokas. Extra bummer. Keep your chin up.

Back two Aprils ago when I dislocated my thumb and spent the next 6 weeks in a splint, running was a godsend. Hopefully you can at least run. I thought I'd be able to ride, but it just didn't go well and so I had to wait until I had my hand back again.

This completely stinks, but you're going to be so hungry for the tri you DO get to do that maybe you'll forget to be scared about it. And really, your clipless pedals may well have saved you from breaking your LEG, too. My mom's friend got a nasty break sticking her leg out to catch herself on a fall.

Oh no!!! I am so sorry to hear this - I know you must be devastated... Hopefully there will be a silver lining somewhere. In the meantime, heal well.

I'm so so sorry! You deserve lots of sympathy, totally not fair. I fell so many times with my clips and probably was just lucky I didn't have the same fate.

All the swimming and biking aren't down the drain at all...you learned a lot that you will pick right back up when you can get back in the water...and there will be plenty of tris you can do, hopefully later this summer! Hang in there girl...and big, big hugs to you!!

Oh my! I'm sorry about your injury. I know it's frustrating to plan for something and then have something happen that changes things. This doesn't need to mean no triathlon ever, just nut right now. Get well soon!

This is the 3rd bike accident I have read today in blog land...I'm so sorry. I'm so bummed and sad for you. I was so anxious to compare our tri stories. You will heal and do one...soon. So sorry, get better!

It's just so disappointing for you. I hope you heal quickly without complication so you can be back into it in no time.

Aargh! Nightmare! I'm so sorry to read this. I hope it heals fast - and you should sign up for another tri right now! That training won't go to waste once you're back in the saddle.

Glad you're ok aside from the broken wrist and disappointment in not being able to do your first tri. My heart breaks for you a little. I know you would have rocked it. Now you'll be that much more determined when you are able to do your first.
Heal quickly!!

This really sucks! You have all my sympathy. I know I can run with a cast so maybe after a week or so you can try. Time to find another triathlon. You will still do one sooner than later. Take care!

Ohhh NOOOO!!!! I got so sad when I saw this post!!!! :( I know how much injury hurts emotionally--I had to quit my training for a big race last summer bc of injury and it just plain SUCKS. Thinking of you and wishing you speedy recovery! Keep your chin up!

Paul said...

AAARRGGH. So sorry to hear this.

You will heal up and find another tri I'm sure...and all your biking and swimming is getting better and better...you will harvest all that training!

Amazing that you had no idea you broke it until you tried to use it. You must have a high pain threshold..8)

The clips are tricky. I feel more secure in some ways with them (can't fly off on an unexpected big bump) but the falling over thing is always lurking...at least that is at low velocity!

Katie said...

OH NO!

Wishing for a quick recovery for you!

I am totally sad with and for you! Injuries suck, no doubt about it...but you WILL come back and we will be cheering you on all the way! This is just temporary!!!!

Teamarcia said...

So bummed for you. That is all. Party away. You've earned it.

Damn! That sucks. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

SO frustrating! But this is not the end, just the beginning. All the bike fitness you built will still be there. You can still train on a trainer (boring but will keep fitness up). And your an still run! Yay! You will get to do your first tri, just a little later than planned:)

You didn't miss any announcements. I'm kind of waiting to decide for sure until I know my knee will be ok for it, but I'll tell you...I think I'm going to do a 12 hour MTB race solo on the 23rd. It's laps on a loop course, so nothing as epic as Dirty Kanza, but still scary nonetheless with all the people passing me. And, you know, 12 hours.

i am late but i think you saw my FB comment at least. :( x 1000!! but, i am glad the RD let you postpone your entry to a later tri - that was cool of him.

i hope you are not in too much pain and i admire that you are still blogging/commenting with a broken wrist!!

you do have one good thing going for you -- halnon girls tend to come back stronger and faster after breaking something :)
