Racing Wasn't Enough....

When I got home from my race on Sunday I decided to try going for a ride.  The problem was the time of day and the cold.  I thought I had a light but trying to put on my new light was a debacle and I didn't have a light when I left.

It was about 39 degrees and I wore my medium gloves - why not the warmest, I am not sure what I am waiting for - ,  a headband under my helmet, bike shorts with pants over them, short sleeve tech shirt, sweatshirt, down vest and light reflective bike jacket.  I did not wear my new toe things - again I don't know what I am waiting for.

I only planned to get in ten miles as there wasn't a lot of time. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride in spite of the cold. For the most part different parts of me were cold at different times. I got an instant ice cream headache as the first part of the ride was downhill.  Then it was my fingers.  Both of those went away and I remember thinking my toes weren't cold at all.  My legs felt cold but that also went away.  By the time I turned around I was noticing my toes and those never warmed up again although they weren't killing me.

When I got home and got my shoes off my toes were very bright red!!  It was foolish of me to not wear the toe things. When I went to check the temperature it was 29 degrees. Oops. No wonder I saw a thin sheet of ice on the beaver pond.
Sorry for the gross about to fall off toenail.

How cold will you ride in?  What do you wear?  Any good recommendations for lights?  Maybe I should get the trainer set up.  At this point I have more daylight hours available to me next week because of Thanksgiving so I have at least a couple more outdoor rides.

BRRRR! Sounds very cold! I'd be all bundled up (or working out indoors) for sure!

I've looked at a fahrenheit to celsius converter and decided that that was a cold ride! At the moment it's around 12 degrees C here (about 53F) so fine for cycling. I usually keep cycling through the winter - except when there is snow or ice on the ground.

I'm still (re)mastering the dress for fall-ish running thing. My hubs is an avid outdoor cyclist. The cold doesn't deter him it is more all of the debris on the roads.

I have unmasked you - you only ride to take awesome pictures!

Anything under 65 degrees is too cold for me to ride. I just don't have much in the way of winter gear.

That sounds and looks cold! I don't bike so can't help with what to wear. It is very hot here by me now.

I'll mountain bike down into the 20's, but there's more protection from the wind than on the roads. I'm not big on any road riding once it gets too cold.

I have very little cold weather bike gear, so usually I'll wear a hat, gloves, running tights over my bike shorts, wool socks, and some form of layering on my upper body: base layer, long sleeved jersey, fleece jacket, wind breaker. It's always a work in progress.

Not sure I could mentally go bike if it were that cold!

My limit is about 50 =)...however, usually if it's cold like that it means it's raining and I won't bike in the rain so, problem solved.

I won't ride full stop. And it's all because of a white poodle that decided to run in front of my bike. Surprise furry speed bump! I ended up on the ground bleeding but the poodle was fine.

That's pretty hard core cycling in my book. I'm a wimp when it comes to cold cycling. I don't like riding my road bike when it's below 60. I know, that plus watching HGTV is almost enough to have to turn in my man card :-). I will run down to about 0 degrees.
