Three Things Thursday/Running/Report Cards/Reading

I love Three Things Thursday. It means tomorrow is Friday!!!

1.  I had the best unexpected run this week.  I hadn't planned on being able to go outside mid week but I had an appt.  I had just a little time between the time I got out of work and had to be there.  I could have packed better but I didn't know it was going to be such a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the temps were higher than they have been in awhile. I found a place to park my car and went running on a road I have never run on.  Years ago when I biked I used to ride on it frequently because it is very nice but I had never been on foot.  I had my trusty garmin on and had time to go about 4 miles so out I went - turned around at 2.1 and headed back!  I got to my appt. with 4 minutes to spare feeling great!  My dentist knew I had been running a half marathon the weekend before so I got to talk about my race some more!  Life was truly good!

2. But then..... when I was done I headed back to school.  Report cards go home next week and I had done nothing on them.  I stayed late at school several days this week but I am going to have to go in this weekend too.  If I only had report cards to do it would be fine but those darn kids keep coming to school and doing work. So I have to plan, teach, correct, repeat.
Hmmm. I never knew this book existed. I do feel like I keep saying the same thing.  Maybe I need to purchase this.  I mean really!  Do people use this?

3. I'm almost done Chris Bohjalian's new book, Secret of Eden.  I am a real fan of CB and not just because he frequents my local gym and lives in my town.  I like the way he writes and really delves into a topic.  All of his books are different.  Having said that this is not one of favorites.  He sometimes writes an ending that makes me angry (The Double Bind) but I don't know yet if that is the case with this book. The book keeps switching the narrator.  I think this can be a hard thing to pull off and I can't say I like it in this book.  None of the characters are very likable and I am not rooting for anyone.  My favorite book by him is The Buffalo Soldier.  I also liked Midwives and Law of Similars.

I am so glad that you were able to get a bonus run in! Woo hoo!!! I really wish that I had more time to read a good book. Right now I am reading blogs...so I guess that is sort of reading...right? Thank goodness it is Friday tomorrow:)

It seems you are pretty well prepared for unexpected runs. I carry a small bag with my exercise/running stuff in the car all the time, just in case. And wipes, gotta have wipes since I sweat a lot.
How about giving kids tests so you would have time to do report cards. Of course they would have to correct those tests themselves. I bet they would love that. :) then they could do their own report cards. Problem solved.
What are you teaching?

Those runs are always the best!

I swear some of my kids teachers use a book like that. Some of them seem to have 3 or 4 sentences that they use for all their reports.

I had a teacher comment book like that but the comments were translated into Spanish... not being bilingual, it was very helpful and made doing report cards a tad easier.

I've never heard of that author. I'll have to check him out. I do not like books where there are no likable characters, though. I have to have someone to cheer for. :)

Awesome mid-week run!

Ah, report cards. Such fun for you. I read Midwives and liked it. I have a hard time with most books that keep switching narrator; it takes me half the book to figure out who's talking when, even if it is obvious. I love that he goes to your gym as well.

I love Chris Bohjahlian! Midwives was so good and I also loved Buffalo Soldier and Trans Sister Radio, even though I really didn't thing I was going to like that one at all. I blogged about a few of his books on my book blog...that's so funny he goes to your gym and lives in your town! I haven't seen the new book yet...

A bonus run is always a gift!
We just got report cards here last week and Thing 1's teacher wrote the sweetest note. Wonder if she read that book? Have a great weekend!

I have never used the books. I always hate making comments on report cards :-) Have a great weekend!

That is so cool that you can be prepared for an impromptu run like that. WTG!

I have no problems with comments. I teach HS and I just tell all the kids they're DORKS!! :) Just Kidding!!

I love it when the stars align and you get a great, unexpected run! How fun!

Unexpected runs are the best. Sometimes when I plan too much, runs are disappointing and when they are spontaneous they're great!

Report cards...my parents are teachers and I've heard lots about report cards over the years. I didn't understand the complaints or hassle until grad school when I taught for 2 years and holy mother, grading takes forever!

I love the report card book - you should get it!

I'm finishing up my report cards too, ugh! We do ours on the computer and they have a dictionary of comments that we can use but the are kind of robotic-sounding so I think I'd like a book for a few ideas. I try to get away from saying the same things but it's so hard!

I hope you finish them up quickly!

I've never read CB. I'll have to keep that in mind.

It's me again. I just had to say, "HA!" Regarding the homeschooling comment...you are too funny. I think teachers think alike!
I hope you finish the RC quickly tomorrow!

I love reading too. Here are the book I read on vacation (since you asked):
"Beyond the Limits - a woman's triumph on Everest" by Stacy Allison. It's well written and a story about life and climbing.
"Note found in a Bottle - my life as a drinker" by Susan Cheever. She's an excellent writer and her memoir is interesting.
"Running with Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs. Another memoir. This one is, as one reviewer put it "as funny as it is twisted" it's a bit horrifying sometimes. Still, once you get into it, you want to get to the end.
That's it for now...I'm into memoirs these days.

Sometimes the unplanned workouts are the most satisfying of the week because there is no worry about what was on "schedule"!

Hey, thanks for coming by to visit my blog. It sounds like Thursday's run was A for Awesome. I would have done the same thing:)
