Three Things Thursday - The Duathlon Addition

1. Okay, I am getting nervous.

I know NOTHING about doing a duathlon.  I don't know how to attach the number to the bike.  I do know you need to dismount and walk in but I am afraid I will forget. I am afraid I will break some rule I don't even know exists.  I am afraid I will be so far behind I won't even see other bikers.  I am afraid some people will finish their run while I am still biking.  I am afraid I will feel like a fish out of water. I don't know anyone going at this point and I am not good at small talk.

2.  But.......having said all that I am also very excited.  This was a goal I thought of last fall when I started biking due to my injury and I am pleased that I have followed through. Or I will have mid day on Sunday.  I am excited to be doing something outside of my comfort zone that may open other opportunities for me.  I am thrilled at how much I love biking and can't wait to do LOTS of biking this summer although very little of it will involve racing. I really have paid no attention to the running part of this race and perhaps I should be more nervous about it particularly that first uphill mile.  I think I will be so glad to be running and doing something totally in my comfort zone that I won't care.

3. Here are my goals.

I want to have fun.

I want to finish.

I want to finish with the feeling that I want to do it again.

Excellent goals for a first event!

The 2nd one is the one you should stress over!

I like that the first goal you listed is to have fun. Good for you, I am excited for you.

I think you'll be fine and you'll have a great time. If it's anything like the triathlon I did then you will likely have zip ties to attach your number to your bike. Don't worry. The volunteers will certainly be able to answer any of your questions. If not, you can make small talk by asking other athletes! I'm sure they'd be happy to help. Best of luck to you. Look forward to hearing how it goes!

You're going to be a DU natural, I just know it. Throw your two favie sports together and AJH is in heaven. When I did my first DU (and the whole 3 in the series) I was panicky but you just watch and learn and all is good :). Have a blast, I can't wait to hear about it!! Whoohooo, go AJH!!

Oh, you will have a blast. There are volunteers who will tell you what to do. The only thing you should look up is drafting, making sure that you don't speed up when people are about to pass you, and keep your distance from the person in front of you.

You will be awesome! I'm sure there will be signs and volunteers that will tell you where to dismount. Good luck!

Comfort zone...ack! I just wrote about mine. You're going to do great! You surely won't be the only newbie out there. You love to run, you love to bike, you're likely not going to be the first one across the finish line so just watch and see what the people in front of you do.

GREAT goals. Figure out what you're doing this time, and then do it even better next time...or at least with fewer butterflies. :) You're going to be great!

Nervous shmervous - you are going to do great. It's your first one -enjoy it; then on your second go round you'll be a veteran!

I'm sure you've spectated at enough triathlons to know more than you think you know, and there will be LOTS of other newbies. Feeling sort of self-conscious like, "Am I doing this right?" is probably the worst part of your first multi-sport event. After that you get to enjoy the run and the ride! You are going to be fantastic!! Just make sure you take off your helmet before you run. :) (Okay, you know I HAD to make that joke, right???)

I have felt every single one of your fears and
1. They have never come true
2. Even if they did come true, what would it matter?

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time - except maybe that first little uphill part of the run.

Those are perfect goals if you ask me. Nervous is GOOD. BTW, regarding the beautiful pics comment...what I meant was that this is the time of the year when I get jealous of where you live. It's always beautiful there, but I'm allergic to snow.
