Three Things Thursday


1.  My last 5 races have all been triathlons or duathlons with the exception of a half that I had registered for long ago.  My last regular race was a 5K on the Fourth of July.  I usually race a ton but not lately.I guess I need to get back in the running race mood as winter is on it's way.  There was a very heavy frost this morning.  I'm hoping it's a little less so tomorrow morning because my plan is to get up and run early but if I have to defrost my car that might be all it takes to convince me not to go.  Do you get up easily to exercise in the morning on a work day?  I've been doing it more lately but it is never easy.

2.  I have gone ahead and bought a trainer for my bike. It isn't out of the box yet (kind of like the wet suit) but I suspect it will be soon.  It is getting darker and colder on the bike. I have my stuff packed for a ride after school tomorrow (which is why I need to get up to get my run in) and I also threw my new bike light in.  My question for this is how have you used trainers, those of you who have.  How often? Do you shoot for a certain mileage?  Which bike should I put on it?  I have a mountain bike, a hybrid and my road bike.  I know one thing, I'll certainly miss my scenery.
I think I need one of these.  Or maybe a pumpkin beer.  

3. Work continues to be stressful.  What a difference a year makes. Once again, thank God for exercise for keeping me sane.  We've been doing NECAP (no child left behind) tests for the past two weeks and for many kids a change in routine is very hard.  The tests are extremely hard for some kids and very frustrating for them. Everyone has to sit still and remain completely quiet for about 90 minutes.  VERY difficult for many of them.  Tomorrow is the last test and I am as happy as they are.

I'd say don't put your MTB on the trainer. You have the best chance of being able to use it outside through the winter. Probably put on your road bike...that's where you spend most of your riding time during the year, so it makes sense to stay riding it.

I'm sorry your year is so stressful. I hope it gets better.

I think teachers have one of the most stressful jobs around. Personally I admire every single one of you because dealing with kids and parents is tougher than cage-wrestling lions and a lot more dangerous.

Hope you and your students get through the last of those tests with flying colors today - school can definitely be very stressful for kids, teachers and parents, too! My youngest son just told me this week that he feels stressed out about school pretty much all the time and that made me sad...

I almost never do my workout before work. Of course, I wake up at 4:50 as it is and there is NO WAY I'm waking up earlier than that to workout. I have gone into work and done long runs with a few coworkers before signing in for the day though. I'm technically on a flexible schedule but I like getting to work super early so I can get home in the early afternoon.

I only have one bike, so I don't really have an option, but I would still vote for your road bike. That way you are still used to riding it when Spring arrives...you say familiar with the gearing the way the seat feels, etc. I have a speed/distance/cadence sensor on my bike that works with my Garmin, so most of the time I still set out to get a specific # of miles, but you can obviously do either. Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to get in a few hours on the bike just do hours. But if you want to keep you mileage at a certain point than focus on that. The trainer is a great way to build strength on the bike over the winter though because you can do things you can't do easily while on the road, like one legged drills, and standing on the bike. Have fun, put it in front of a TV if you can...it can be seriously boring!

I love working out in the morning before work, in fact it's all I'm doing.

In Summer when it's light when I get up it doesn't matter if I have a run scheduled or a DVD workout at home.

But in Winter it depends. If I have a DVD scheduled I don't have problems getting out of bed and do it, even if it's dark. But running is different. I still haven't adjusted to running in the dark yet, need a couple of more weeks for that. That's also the reason I run twice at the weekend and only once during the work week so I have to run in the dark just once.

Sorry to hear that work is so stressful. Thank goodness you have such a great stress-reliever in the form of your bike.
