Spirit Week - Don't Worry It Gets to the Running Related Section

This is Spirit Week at school which always happens the week before spring vacation.  Each day is a different opportunity to dress up.  Ohh you say isn't that great for the students! Well, yes and no.  Of course it is fun but here is the no at least for the teachers.  It gets them wilder and wilder as the week goes on and by Friday look out. There is nothing better to create a calm atmosphere in a classroom than to have everyone decked out in a costume or sporting crazy hair and hats.  Here is the week's schedule:
Monday - Dress like an athlete
Tuesday - Twin Day
Wednesday - Super Hero Day
Thursday - Tropical Day
Friday - Crazy Hat and Hair Day

We always seem to have the Tues, Thurs. and Fri. choices.  This was only the second time we have had Athlete Day and I was pumped.  BUT then I was home sick on Monday and didn't get to wear any of the 3 possible outfits I had waiting.  But on Super Hero Day no one quite knew what it meant as it is new. Everytime as student asked me if they could ........dress like (insert anything here) I said yes knowing that I was going to be fast and loose with super hero also.  Sort of.  When I was on FB the other night I saw that Joan Benoit Samuelson was going to be running Boston.  My first thought was: maybe I'll see her.  My second thought was: she is my hero.  In fact she is my super hero. So I dressed up as............Joan Benoit Samuelson for Super Hero Day and got to wear my running clothes!  I wore one of my race age group medals that had a red, white and blue ribbon and was gold as the Olympic gold medal of course.  I'm sure JBS wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between the two.  Then I printed her picture off the Internet and put in on my school ID.  (Is there a law against defacing your work ID?)
You thought it was Joanie visiting some
classroom in Maine, right?

Are those AJH's arms or JBS's?  I just
photoshopped on the head.
Those muscles are totally mine.

Of course I had to explain to my students (and sadly many adults) who my super hero was.  The funniest and sweetest comment came from a student I taught math to last year. She saw me in the hall and she said,"I know who you're dressed up as- who your super hero is."  I asked her who she was thinking of and she said, "Your daughter, right?"  Of course I said yes.  Out of the mouths of babes.......can come the truth. Sorry Emily I should have gone there myself!

Lovely story - actually Emily is one of my heroes whose blogs I follow - you too of course! I see that Joan B-S is running Boston and hoping to qualify for the Olympics I think? What a legend!

What a great post.
Aren't running clothes just great for work or anything for that matter? I could wear them all day long.

Very cool and fun way to share your running passion with the kids. Looks like today you can put on your Hawaiian shirt and pretend there is no snow on the ground.... :)

That is awesome! One year for Halloween I dressed up as a blood doping cyclist. I had to explain it to everyone!

Ha ha! You crack me up! I was so pumped to hear JBS was running! I watched her finish the 5K last year. BIGTIME goosebumps! I had no doubts that you photoshopped her head on your guns there!!! Getting pumped to track your daughter:)

We have spirit week, too, during Homecoming...so much fun - my favorite is "dress like a student" - we get some great outfits (this is high school after all ;)).

Yep, I knew those were your arms immediately!!! :)

Awesome Super Hero Pick!!! (Joanie & Emily!) :)

Too fantastic. You are very good at photoshopping, but I can tell your arms anywhere!

Great idea...she's my hero too (Joan & Emily). She does run the Freihofers every year (Jun 4) in Albany! Hint...hint.

Love this! And I LOVE Spirit Week. Any excuse to dress up. This year we dressed in different sports' clothes for ISAT week, too. Of course, the sports were basketball, football, soccer, hockey, and then our school spirit shirt, so I missed out on the chance to wear any of my collection of race shirts. :(
