What/Who motivates you? What do you tell yourself when you are struggling? How do you keep going when it is too cold, too windy, too hot, too humid, too early, too late, etc...?
I think I motivate myself. I am a very goal oriented person and if I set a goal or a plan I do it. Each Sunday I plan my running for the next week. How far, when, where. I look at my calendar to see where I am busy and plan around it. This has worked for me for a long time. If I have planned it, I DO IT! Of course there are times when this is stupid such as when I am sick so I try to use common sense but try is the operative word there.
If I am struggling I tell myself it will be over but to keep going. Sometimes on the dreadmill I take walk breaks if I am flagging. I pretty much keep going until the miles are completed but they are not all good miles. The only weather I avoid is thunder storms as I am not going to run in those, it's a good way to get killed! But if you have read my blog for awhile you know cold doesn't stop me. I don't like heat so I do run as early as I can in the summer. I am not sure how I will handle DC when I visit in June! I also don't run in the dark unless it is in a well lit safe area and that is very seldom.
Other news
I have registered for a race in Maryland besides the race in Colorado this summer. The race in Maryland has a mother/daughter division. Em and I will totally rock it!!!
Taken at our last (and only) mother/daughter 5K race
The one we drove 4 hours to run!!
And........not so good. As a school teacher I found out today one of my students has the dreaded...........lice!!! I have been itching ever since!!!!

Great post, minus the last part, good luck with that.
Love the latest header pic! FIRE!!! :)
Also love the photo of you and your daughter... how perfect for the upcoming Mother's Day weekend. Beautiful.
And for the last part: eeewwww!!!!! Now I'm scratching! lol
Oh my gosh! I just clicked on your upcoming run this weekend and started smiling at the event and sweet young face of Sarah. Then, as I continued to read, alligator ears began to fall. How sad. How beautiful. I'm glad you'll be doing this race, ajh. God Bless.
I'm also very self-motivated...I then to be quite goal-driven. With a good dose of common sense...that comes with life experience I think :)
How cool about the mother/daughter race...not so cool about the lice...ugh! Makes me itchy just reading that.
How do you get such great pics of you running??
A mother/daughter race - that's wonderful!! What a great idea.
A mother-daughter race...that sounds awesome! That is such a cute pic.
Self-motivation is the best.
Gross, lice! We had that at our school for a bit this winter, I was totally grossed-out. The mother/daughter race sounds really fun...those will be memories you can never replace!!! What race are you doing in Colorado? Maybe we can hook up while you're here!!
This was a great post! I love little Jill's Brain exchange:) You seem to be very motivated..a mover and a shaker:) I think it would be so fun to do the mother and daughter race. Maybe they have something like that here in Minnesota:) If I find something I am signing Kay and I up...she has no choice:)
You and Emily will most certainly rock that race!
The mother/daughter race sounds great! Good luck with the lice. I hope you don't catch it!
I'm goal oriented too ... kind of like a dog on a bone when I set my mind to it. It gets me in trouble from time to time, but in general I think it's a good thing.
Icky, lick! The kids and I were exposed to it last year after staying at a friends. We never got it, but I was SO itchy for days just thinking about it. OK ... I just scratched my head - ugh!!!!
Ack we had a HUGE lice breakout in the 4th grade this year! It is down the hall from me and I still itched!!!
Love the photo at the top!!!
Ugh on the lice! How embarrassing for the poor kid! Hope you are able to steer clear!
How fun on the Mother/Daughter race! I am trying to get my mom to enter a fun walk/run that is only one mile, but so far she is a no go.
Love the pics! A mother/daughter race is the most fun ever!
Eeeeeww lice! I hate when those notices come home from school.
Ew, lice! One year all three of my boys came home with them - luckily that was when they still let me cut their hair and I got my clippers out and gave them the shortest buzz cuts ever - best way to get rid of lice without chemicals but really only works on little boys!
I have also heard that if you use a few drops of lavender essentiel oil on your own head, this keeps the lice away - perhaps worth a try?
I need to get into a 'training zone' then things go smoothly and nothing can stop me from running. I don't really know how I get into that mode it just happens. On the other hand there are times when it is very, very hard to find motivations. The only thing that keeps me going is fear that if I say, that I will skip one run I may end up skipping more.
Who motivates me? Gosh, all kinds of people. Love reading especially about people who are able to overcome obstacles, age, amputations, cancer. Their struggles put my laziness in perspective.
Whenever I hear that someone has lice I itch all over too!!! That will be awesome to be in a race with your daughter :)
Great post! I'm very similar. Plan it, do it. I very seldom miss a planned run. Lightning and hail is my only excuses.
We got a letter from school the other day saying some kids have lice. I've been itching since then!
Sounds like you and your daughter are going to rock the mom/daughter race.
eeewwwww! Lice!!
I'm glad you can motivate yourself! And I love that you and your daughter both run! :D Just say no to lice! Hope no one else gets it!!
I've had lice many times! I'm also itching like crazy as I'm writing this! I dream of running a mother/daughter race, you're so blessed!
Thanks for the CO race info, I've heard about that race (challenging!) and was going to run it last year in prep for when I ran Pikes Peak...but I didn't b/c I had so other thing going on. I may try to do it this year, would be a blast to meet ya!! Keep in touch about it!
now you've got me itching.
I'm an internal motivator too. Reading everyone else's blogs gets me pumped up too!
When is your race in Colorado? Way cool!
Can't believe he isn't embarrassed! Must be a boy thing.
